The Fish Tale

Deep under the sea
See the lovely coloured fish
Swimming peacefully.
This special poem in three lines is called a Haiku. Such poems about nature are popular in Japan.
Another Haiku
The lake, calm, smooth, still
A fish jumps up and returns
Ripples shake the lake.
When you think of fishes what shapes come to your mind?
Drawing Fish
Using a square and a triangle to draw a fish.
There are different types of fishes. Some of them are as, whale, shark, etc. They can have very different sizes.
Difference Between Whale and Shark
WhaleShark
Whales are mammals.Sharks are fish.
Whales give birth to young ones.Sharks lay eggs.
Whales feed milk to the young whale.Sharks do not feed milk.
The female whale carries her offspring in her womb..Sharks do not.
Whales have bones.Sharks have no bones, they have only cartilage.
Whales are much larger than sharks.Sharks are smaller than whales.
Whales breathe like us.Sharks breathe through gills.
Whale are heavier in weigh approx more than 100 tons.Sharks are lighter in weigh approx 2,000 kg.
Whales do not hunt.Sharks hunt for their food.
Whales produce sound.Sharks do not produce sound.
Whales can reach a height of 35 meters.Sharks can reach a height of six meters.
Whales tail stands flat along its body.Sharks have vertical tail fins.
Practice Time
If a whale shark weight is 16000 kg and your weight is 40 kg, then find out.
So 20 children like you put together will weigh aboutkg.
About how much more does the whale shark weigh than 20 children like you put together?kg.
If 100 children like you put together will weigh aboutkg.
The Fish Tail
To see the difference between whales and fish look carefully at their tails. Can you see that the fish tail stands flat along its body, but the tail of the whale almost looks like two legs.
Shoaling and schooling The group of fish live together due to social reasons are called shoaling. The group of fishes, which are swimming in the same direction in a coordinated manner, is called schooling. In their school they feel safe from the bigger fish.
Different Sea Animals
Eel Clam Octopus
Practice Time
Drag the given shapes with the mouse and make sea animals. Also, draw in your notebook.
How many of you have seen the sea?
How do we find direction in the sea? In the beginning, when the man built boats, he also used them for the sea voyages. But he did not dare to travel too far because of the fear of losing his way because he had no means to find directions at sea. During those days, sea travellers used to find different directions with the help of the sun and the stars. But when the sun and the stars were not visible in cloudy weather, finding the right direction was very difficult.
East North South West
Cardinal Directions
The way to a place is called direction. In order to find the direction, we must know in what direction from us sun lies. North, south, east, and west are known as cardinal directions. These cardinal directions can be abbreviated as N, S, E, and W. East and west are perpendiculars (at right angles) to north and south, with east being in the clockwise direction of rotation from north and west being directly opposite east.
North NW NE South East West SW SE
The sun rises in the east. Therefore, the location of the sun in the morning is towards the east. Compare this to the location of the sun in the sky in the late afternoon. The sun sets in the west. At noon local time, the sun is directly overhead.
Boats The fisherman uses the boat to catch the fish. Earlier boats were made of natural materials, mainly of wood. Now, most modern ships are manufactured from metals such as steel, aluminum, composite materials such as fiberglass, and super-strong plastics such as Kevlar. Some boats have motors and go further into the sea. Since they go far out they can catch more fish. These boats travel faster, at the speed of about 20 km in one hour.
Speed of a Boat Can you find the speed of a boat?
Speed =
Distance/Time

Time =
Distance/Speed

Distance = Speed × Time
Example: If the speed of a motorboat is 20Km per hour. How far will the motor boat go in 3 hours?
Solution:
Speed of motorboat = 20Km/h
Time given = 3 hours.
Therefore, Distance = Speed × Time
Distance = 20 × 3
= 60Km
Example: If the speed of a motorboat is 50Km per hour. How far will the motor boat go in four and a half hours?
Solution:
Speed of motorboat = 50Km/h
Time given = 4
1/2
=
9/2
hours.
Therefore, Distance = Speed × Time
Distance = 50 ×
9/2

= 25 × 9 = 225Km
Example: If a boat covers a distance of 60 km in 3 hours. What will be the speed of the boat.
Solution:
Distance = 60Km
Time = 3 Hours
Speed =
Distance/Time

Speed =
60/3

= 20Km/h
Example: If the speed of a motorboat is 20Km per hour. How much time will they take to go 85 km?
Solution:
Speed = 20Km/h
Distance = 85Km
Time =
Distance/Speed

Time =
85/20

=
17/4
Hours
= 4
1/4
Hours
= 4.25 Hours
For hundreds of years fishermen have cared for the sea and its fishes, and fished only a little to eat and sell. They say that if trawlers catch thousands of kilograms of fish everyday, there will be no fish left in the sea!
Write a news report about the dangers faced by the fishes in our rivers and seas.
Which Boat Gets How Much? The table shows the speed of each type of boat, which is how far each boat goes in one hour. Look at the table and calculate —
Type of boatCatch of fish in one trip (in kg)Speed of the boat (how far it goes in one hour)
Log boat204 km per hour
Long tail boat60012 km per hour
Motor boat80020 km per hour
Machine boat600022 km per hour
About how far can a motor boat go in six hours?km.
If a long tail boat has to travel 60 km how long will it take?hour.
How much fish will all boats bring in seven trips?kg.
How much fish will the Machine boat bring in five trips?kg.
How much fish will the Motor boat bring in ten trips?kg.

The Fish Market
This fish market is busy today. Many boats have brought a good catch. The fisherwomen are shouting out their prices to the buyers.
Mini — ‘‘Come here! Come here! Take sardines at Rs 40 a kg’’.
Gracy — ‘‘Never so cheap! Get sword-fish for Rs 60 a kg’’.
Floramma sells prawns for Rs 150 a kg.
Karuthamma sells squid for Rs 50 a kg.
Look, Fazila can hardly carry this big kingfish! She says, ‘‘This fish weighs 8 kg. I will sell the whole for Rs 1200’’.
At what price per kg did Fazila sell the kingfish?
Floramma has sold 10 kg prawns today. How much money did she get for that?
Gracy sold 6 kg sword fish. Mini has earned as much money as Gracy. How many kg of sardines did Mini sell?
Sumesh has Rs 100. He spends one-fourth of the money on squid and another three-fourth on prawns.
How many kilograms of squid did he buy?
How many kilograms of prawns did he buy?
Women's 'Meenkar Bank'
The meeting of the Meenkar Bank has just begun. Fazila is the president. Twenty fisherwomen have made their own bank. Each saves Rs 25 every month and puts it in the bank.
Example: How much money does the group collect each month?
Solution:
Collection from 1 woman = Rs 25
Hence, collection from 20 women = 20 x 25 = Rs 500
Example: How much money will be collected in ten years?
Solution:
Collection of 1 month = Rs 500
There are 12 months in a year.
Hence, collection of 1 year = 12 x 500 = 6000 rupees.
Hence, collection of 10 years = 10 x 6000 = 60000 rupees
Practice time
Gracy took a loan of Rs 4000 to buy a net. She paid back Rs 345 every month for one year. How much money did she pay back to the Bank?
Jhansi and her sister took a loan of Rs 21,000 to buy a log boat. They paid back a total of Rs 23,520 in one year. How much did they pay back every month?
Fish-drying Factory
The women of Meenkar Bank also want to start a factory to dry fish. The Panchayat has given them some land for that. Over the years they have saved Rs 74,000. They find out how much they will need for the factory. Fazila writes the things they need to buy to begin. See the table for the cost of each item and the number of items they want to buy. Find the total cost.
ItemPrice of eachNumber of itemsCost
Bore well for fresh waterRs.30001
Bamboo rack for fish dryingRs.200020
Cement tankRs.10004
Tray and knifeRs.30020
BucketRs.7520
Total cost to set up the factory.
When fresh fish is dried it becomes 1/3 its weight. In one month they plan to dry 6000 kg of fresh fish. How much dried fish will they get in a month?
Example: When the fresh fish is dried, it weighs 1/3. Floramma buys fresh fish at Rs 15 per kg. She sells it after drying for Rs 70 per kg. She plans to dry 6000 kg of fresh fish a month. How much money will she make in a month?
Solution:
Let us first calculate for 6 kg of fresh fish.
Floramma dries 6 kg of fresh fish to get 6 ×
1/3
= 2 kg dried fish.
For 6 kg fresh fish she has to pay = 6 × 15 = Rs.90
She will sell 2 kg of dried fish and get = 2 × 70 = Rs.140
So if she dry 6 kg of fresh fish she will earn 140 − 90 = Rs.50
But if she dries 6000 kg, she can earn Rs 50 × 6000 = Rs.300000 in one month!
They are all very happy with this plan. The group can make profits and each woman can get a salary for the work she does. Jhansi — I found that for 6000 kg fish we would need 1500 kg salt every month!
Its price is Rs 2 per kg.
Monthly costs:
a) Salt 1500 × 2 = Rs.3000
b) Packing and bus charges = Rs 3000
So the total monthly cost of drying and selling the fish = 3000 + 3000 = Rs.6000
Fazila — That sounds very good! Our calculations tell us that every month our Bank will earn 300000 − 6000 = Rs 2,94,000!
